"Hummingbird Train"
by Mickey Cochran

This is an original piece written back in the '80s ... it's in Drop-D Tuning which in turn creates the drone that creates the hummingbird effect. It also has a locomotive feel to it, hence the name "Hummingbird Train". I recorded this on my album collaborating with Robert Napier: "Trekkin' the Gila" ...

This tune will be tabbed out and placed in our online lessons section.

This piece establishes the value of an alternating bass line with a drone effect and how original melodies can be composed within this steady rhythm. The possibilities are truly infinite. Even within a simple tuning where the D bass string is dropped down to a low D. There are so many possible variations that can be explored that you could spend a lifetime and never see the end. I've heard many excellent tunes composed using the drone of the alternating low D to middle D. Listen to Mournin' Blues on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band classic album: "Dirt, Silver & Gold" or "Embryonic Journey" by Jorma Kaukonen.
