Ragtime Guitar Video Samplers
"Song for a New Day"
by Mickey Cochran

An original piece written in open D tuning (D-A-D-F#-A-D). Starts off with a free-form chordal study and slowly builds up tempo until establishing a steady rhythm and well-defined melody. A common technique found in Fahey's timeless approach ... Listen to "In Christ There is No East or West" where the entire tune is first established slowly without any sense of time and eventually jumps into a steady rhythm.

This tune will be tabbed out and placed in our online lessons section.

The enclosed video really falls under the "American Primitive Guitar" category well stated by artists such as Kottke, Lang and Fahey. Again, Ragtime Guitar techniques abound throughout this piece. From the syncopated feel to the ragtime-like alternating bass. Although this piece would not fall under the Ragtime Guitar category, it still exemplifies ragtime on every level. American Primitive Guitar is a great alternative to expanding your Ragtime Guitar repertoire. Listen to albums by John Fahey ... or, Peter Lang with "The Thing at the Nursery Room Window" ... Leo Kottke's tour-de-force "6 & 12-String Guitar" all are phenomenal examples of American Primitivism.

The enclosed tune will soon be released on the "6 & 12-String Drawings from the Acoustic Forest".
